News Genetic Engineering opens up the post and DI pipeline (10/5/2007) Quantel's NAB demos showcase openness and accessibility of new system Emphasizing the open and flexible nature of its new Genetic Engineering teamworking solution for Post and DI, demonstrations on the Quantel booth at NAB are featuring third party equipment from ARRI, eyeon Software Inc and MTI Film all hooked up and working live on the system. "Genetic Engineering is not just about Quantel," comments Director of Marketing, Steve Owen. "Post and DI facilities operate in a multi-vendor world and Genetic Engineering reflects that. Windows and Linux-based third parties can connect to the teamworking environment via the Sam data server straight out of the box - there's no proprietary API involved. This allows post houses to choose best of breed equipment that fits their individual businesses without any lock-ins, yet still take full advantage of the power of collaborative workflows." The booth-based demo is based on the workflow at a typical DI house and shows how Genetic Engineering can radically improve efficiencies in three areas of the business. Film is scanned straight into the GenePool shared workspace from an ARRI scanner; MTI Film's Correct-DRS handles the dustbusting; eyeon Software's Fusion the VFX, and all have open access to the same media that is being conformed and graded on the Quantel DI systems. "We are delighted to see a company like Quantel produce such a powerful and open system as Genetic Engineering," says Elfi Bernt, Product Manager, DI Systems, ARRI. "By being able to scan straight into the shared workspace at up to 4K, facilities will be able to save themselves both an unnecessary transfer and disk space. This will help them to not only drive costs down but boost productivity as well." "Being able to plug straight into the Genetic Engineering environment right out of the box is a huge leap forward in the evolution of collaborative environments for post production," comments Joanne Dicaire, Director of Business Development, eyeon Software. "Quantel's solution is admirably open and allows us to work directly with the media, without having to write a single line of code. I wish other systems were this open and easy to use." "Dust-busting DPX files with CORRECT-DRSTM has always been extremely efficient both in terms of time and storage space, because the files are cleaned in place, with the history stored separately," explains David McClure, Product Manager, MTI Film. "This method of working with DPX files fits in seamlessly with Quantel's new open architecture solution, as frames can be cleaned in place on the GenePool."
